Little Felt Person
This afternoon, Richard and I made this little felt person. He's unnamed because we can't decide, but he is loved! Helena has been carrying him around all afternoon. We used a cookie cutter for the outline, and cut two pieces out of black felt. Then I made his face, we stuffed him with filling and a crochet hook, and then I sewed him up. Richard did the finishing up stitching (and poked his wee fingers many times in the process)!
Play Doh!
Homemade playdough is fast and Richard loves it. He's usually over eager to play with it and rolls it around until it cools off. I remember doing the same thing when my dad made it for me.
Helena is trying to get in on the fun too, but she's constantly trying to eat it! Dad's Playdough (possibly modified by me at some point, I don't remember) 1 cup flour 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup salt 1 tbsp oil food colouring Sometimes I use Kool Aid instead of the food colouring, because it turns out much brighter, but it also smells yummy that way and Helena will think it's a snack and be outraged to discover that it isn't.
Barbie Dress, Green Breakfast, Grandma's House
Late last night I whipped up this and I love it. This dress is just like yesterday's except both back and front are lined and there are buttons at both shoulders. Super cute with frilly socks and black boots. Being St. Patrick's Day and all, Richard requested a green breakfast. So we went with green French toast, and green milk. He and Helena thought it was hysterical and literally ate it all (which pretty much never happens). Then we spent the day with the fam, as per usual on the weekend and my Grandmother was baking, as per usual on pretty much any day. Today she was making Cinnamon Rolls. Yum! I love how perfect they look before they even hit the oven
Seven Dwarves Dress
Today while going through a pile of sheets, I found these - the seven dwarves (minus Snow White). I had them when I was a kid, and then my sister had them and then they moved to the extra bedroom and were forgotten. Forgotten till I was in there one day and decided that a quilt made from childhood sheets was something I just needed to make. But I didn't really need the whole sheet for that, so the rest was set aside and when I found it today I knew I had to give it life. It's perfect to make something for Helena, but I wasn't sure what. Then I found this dress that I already know fits her well. So far, sewing patterns have only failed me, so this time I just used the dress as a guide. I cut out a front and a back, hemmed the bottoms, and added a backing to the front of the dress (it's almost see through in the light). I used an old receiving blanket for the backing. Then I sewed it together inside out and viola. Then she woke up from her nap and Richard and I tried it on her and it wouldn't go over her head. D'oh! Back to the lab. I ripped out a shoulder seam, hemmed both edges, added a button and made a buttonhole. And then it fit! Closeup of the button... There are Barbie sheets from the same quilt project itching to be made into one of these, but I think next time I'll put backing on the whole thing.
More socks
My next project was going to be something snazzy for my BFF Brigitte, but Dad mentioned that a close friend of his was asking about socks, and since Brigitte's birthday isn't till next month I can afford this detour. Wayne's Sock #1 I'm still trying to narrow down the something snazzy for Brigitte. I really love the idea of her throwing on something like this lace shawl, but I also really like these. She has super tiny feet, so that would be a really quick knit actually. I want to make something with cables too, I've been assured it's not difficult, I've just never done it. I think this is the perfect pattern to give it a whirl with.
So Can I Call Myself a Sock Knitter Yet?
I think I should be able to say that, I mean, I really like to knit socks. My first sock had no ankle. For real, just a big hole where an ankle should be. Since then I've made two wearable pairs of socks, and the second sock of the third pair is on the needles, almost finished! It's something I punctuate my day with. Get ready, have coffee, make breakfast, knit a few rows, take Richard to school, come home, knit a few rows, make beds, do laundry, knit many more rows, let Helena play in the yarn stash so I can knit a little more... This is my uncle with my second pair of socks (Dad was the proud recipient of my first pair). I'm sure he is overjoyed on the inside.
